Sidley’s Boston office offers a summer program for law students interested in transactional, litigation, healthcare, and regulatory matters. Being a part of the Boston office affords law students the opportunity to work in an entrepreneurial environment while enjoying the resources and support of a large global firm.

Located on historic State Street in Boston’s Government Center neighborhood, Sidley’s Boston office has grown significantly since its establishment in 2013. Working in conjunction with its 21 offices worldwide, our Boston office serves as an important extension of Sidley’s commitment to service key business hubs around the world, achieving results for its clients on their most complex transactional, regulatory, healthcare, and litigation matters. Our Boston lawyers are world-renowned leaders in their respective fields, pride themselves on their longstanding commitment to serving the Boston community, and have a proven track record of achieving results for clients across a broad range of industries including financial services, investment funds, private equity, technology, life sciences, healthcare, and energy.

Our regulatory and litigation lawyers represent global, national and regional securities firms, advisers, funds and other companies with a focus on securities litigation, governmental and regulatory examinations and investigations, and enforcement proceedings by the SEC, FINRA, state securities regulators and FERC, among others. We also have deep experience in white collar criminal defense and complex civil litigation. Our lawyers draw upon their prior service in government positions, as well as with regulatory agencies, to advocate successfully for our clients.

Our transactional lawyers have global experience in all aspects of private equity and asset management, including fund formation, M&A, early- and late-stage private equity investments, leveraged buyouts and recapitalizations, management buyouts, and search funds. We work with clients ranging from some of the best known investment firms and deal makers in the world to middle market and new or emerging firms.

Work Assignments

Boston summer associates perform work that otherwise would be handled by associates and have the flexibility to sample projects from a variety of practice areas. As a summer associate, you will be able to gain hands-on experience and demonstrate your skills on legal projects for Sidley clients. You may also have the chance to observe or participate in client conferences, negotiations, witness interviews, depositions, and court hearings.

Professional Development

We provide summer associates with numerous opportunities to learn and develop their professional skills. Training includes detailed reviews of each summer associate’s work product, as well as practice group overviews, an introduction to depositions, and extensive writing, negotiations and communications workshop. We assign partners as mentors to provide guidance and feedback throughout the summer, and each summer associate receives a formal review at the midpoint and end of the program. You will also be paired with an associate mentor, who will provide you with practical advice and a view into the life of junior associates in the office.

Summer Life

An important part of your summer experience is building relationships with your future colleagues. Throughout the summer, you will be invited to attend a mix of social and networking events, as well as office-wide programming, practice-specific presentations, and other educational workshops. These events will give you a chance to get to know our lawyers and your fellow summer associates both personally and professionally.

Past summer associate events in Boston included:

  • Building friendships with fellow summer associates while attempting to complete an escape room.
  • Participating in a cooking class.
  • Working together to create artwork for Artists for Humanity.
  • Taking in a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park.
  • Competing against associates and other summer associates at Ax Throwing.
  • Working on our putting skills with colleagues at a mini golf event.
