Washington, D.C.
This year Sidley celebrates the 50th anniversary of its office in Washington, D.C., which has grown from three lawyers in 1963 to 275 lawyers and policy professionals today. Located on K Street two blocks from the White House, the firm’s D.C. office is at the crossroads of law and policy, providing comprehensive regulatory, legislative and litigation services to domestic and international clients in numerous industries.
Many of Sidley’s D.C. lawyers possess invaluable perspective and experience garnered from years of prior government service, including high-level positions at the Justice Department and other federal departments and agencies, the White House, and on Capitol Hill. In addition, more than 70 of the firm’s D.C. lawyers have served as clerks in federal and state courts across the country, including 16 who served at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Befitting its location in the nation’s capital, the D.C. office has extensive regulatory capabilities – both counseling and specialized litigation – in a vast array of practice areas, including antitrust/competition, banking and financial services, communications, corporate reorganization and bankruptcy, energy, environmental, food, drug and medical devices, healthcare, international trade, privacy, data security and information law, project finance and infrastructure, securities and futures, and transportation.
Sidley’s D.C. litigation practice, one of the region’s largest, has a record of success in cases against the government and private parties across a broad range of subject matters, including accountant/professional service firm liability, complex commercial, food, drug and medical device enforcement, intellectual property, government contracts, products liability, international arbitration, and SEC enforcement.
The D.C. office also is well-known for its prestigious Supreme Court and appellate practice comprised of lawyers who have briefed more than 190 cases on behalf of firm clients on the merits and have argued more than 108 cases before the Court. Sidley’s appellate team has appeared in every federal circuit as well as in numerous state appellate courts.
In addition, the D.C. office white collar litigation and investigations group leads a firm-wide global and international enforcement team anchored by our renowned Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) practice.
Sidley has deep roots in the D.C. community, devoting tens of thousands of hours each year to pro bono work and other service initiatives through longstanding partnerships with D.C.-based organizations. The office holds an annual “Service Week” that engages lawyers, summer associates and staff in a variety of volunteer activities such as working at a local soup kitchen, donating blood, making sandwiches for distribution by the Salvation Army, and helping asylees apply for permanent residence in the United States.
