Los Angeles
Located in the Gas Company Tower, Sidley’s Los Angeles office has approximately 160 lawyers who represent Fortune 500 corporations, government agencies, entrepreneurial businesses and associations at the local, national and global level. The office also serves as a U.S. gateway for the firm’s Asia and Pacific Rim offices.
Lawyers in the Los Angeles office provide legal services in the corporate and finance, employment and labor, environmental, intellectual property and technology, insolvency, litigation, real estate, and taxation areas, frequently teaming with lawyers in other U.S. and overseas offices to meet client needs.
The firm has extensive experience with issues specific to companies doing business in California, including litigation relating to SEC enforcement actions, unfair business practices claims, misleading advertising and unfair competition cases under California Business and Professions Codes § 17200 and § 17500 and the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act, and environmental matters under Proposition 65.
Los Angeles litigators, several of whom formerly worked for the Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles, are an integral part of Sidley’s firm-wide SEC enforcement, antitrust/competition, accountants’ liability and securities practices. In addition, the office has a robust state and federal court appellate practice that includes lawyers who coauthored one of the leading treatises on Ninth Circuit practice (Federal Appellate Practice Guide: Ninth Circuit, Lawyers Cooperative, 1999).
The corporate and finance team in Los Angeles handles a high volume of private equity deals and hedge fund offerings, and also regularly represents clients in U.S. and cross-border financings, securitizations, investments, joint ventures, restructurings and commercial transactions. In the real estate area, Los Angeles lawyers counsel lenders, developers, builders, investors, owners and tenants in creative and sophisticated transactions.
Intellectual property and technology is another significant area of practice in Sidley’s Los Angeles office and encompasses asset development and management, counseling, dispute resolution, licensing, and prosecution services. In addition, the Los Angeles employment and labor group regularly litigates single-plaintiff, multiple-plaintiff and class action claims and has substantial experience defending wage and hour lawsuits.
Sidley devotes a substantial portion of its talents and resources to the community, including acting as principal counsel to the Los Angeles Music Center and Long Beach Aquarium, sponsoring public interest law fellowships at UCLA and USC law schools, and serving as an educational partner to Dorsey High School’s Law Magnet Program. In 2012, law firms and organizations, including Sidley, participated in Food from the Bar, which raised more than $467,000 (the equivalent of 1.8 million meals) and collected 17,000 pounds of food donations. In connection with this effort, we received the “Gold Partner” award for raising $7,161 and collecting 673 pounds of food.
