Sidley’s largest office traces its origins back to 1866. For 150 years, the firm has grown with the city, and remains one of the largest and most respected law offices in Chicago. More than 500 lawyers in the Chicago office work on a broad range of litigation, transactional and regulatory matters to meet the needs of our diverse client base.

Our Chicago office is the principal tenant of Illinois’s first LEED-CS (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Core and Shell Development) Silver Certified Green Building. Located at One South Dearborn, the office sits in the heart of the city’s “Loop” business district nestled among some of the first modern skyscrapers and only blocks from the Chicago River, Millennium Park and shores of beautiful Lake Michigan.

Work Assignments

Chicago summer associates gain exposure to interesting and challenging work in a wide variety of practice areas. You will have the freedom and flexibility to select many of your assignments and to manage your workload.

Our Chicago office has committed substantial resources to the community and a variety of pro bono activities. Summer associates may volunteer to work with Cabrini Green Legal Aid, which provides high-impact, free legal services to low-income Chicagoans.

Professional Development

You can supplement your work experience with our summer associate training programs and activities, including seminars on litigation skills and contract drafting, as well as mock closings and mock trials. Summer associates will also be able to attend practice-specific presentations, in-house CLE programs and other educational workshops. Additional resources we provide to help you succeed include legal writing advisors, who you can consult with when you have legal research and writing questions.

You’ll find a supportive network to assist you as you explore practice areas of interest. Personal and professional development, support and guidance are provided through mentoring relationships with both partners and associates.

Summer Life in Chicago

An important part of your summer experience is building relationships with your future colleagues. Throughout the summer you will be invited to attend a mix of large-scale and smaller social and networking events, and to participate in office-wide programming. We give you a chance to get to know our lawyers and your fellow summers both professionally and personally while also experiencing all that Chicago has to offer.

In addition to exploring our diverse “city of neighborhoods” and partaking in some of the 100-plus summer street and music festivals, as a summer associate in Chicago your calendar might include activities like:

  • Getting a taste of one of the country’s top food cities at lunches, happy hours and dinners with associates and partners
  • Attending events hosted at partners’ homes
  • Participating in a team-building “Iron Chef”-style cooking competition
  • Experiencing the city’s world-class skyline on an architectural boat tour
  • Creating an original work of art at Bottle & Bottega
  • Visiting local museums and artistic attractions
